China has released a leading Uighur political prisoner, a US-based rights group has said.

Rebiya Kadeer, 58, was allowed to leave China for medical treatment in the US, the San-Francisco-based Dui Hua Foundation said in a statement.

Ms Kadeer, a millionaire, was sentenced to eight years in jail in 2000 for endangering national security.

The release came as the US said it would not seek a UN resolution critical of China's human rights record.

The release comes days before US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is due in Beijing.
