Dear Mid-Atlantic Members -

When applying to the International Olympic Committee, the Chinese Government promised to improve its human rights record but so far little has been done. The Olympics are China’s chance to showcase its wonderful culture, creating a positive legacy that will last decades. This week, on Thursday, July 10th, from 5:30PM-6:30PM, Amnesty International will host a rally in front of the White House urging President Bush to take immediate action towards addressing human rights violations in China and mark one month until the start of the Olympic Games.

WHAT: China Olympics Rally

WHY: To send a strong message to President Bush urging him to address human rights abuses in China

WHEN: Thursday, July 10th, 5:30PM - 6:30PM

WHERE: Lafayette Park - SE Quadrant, Washington, DC

DIRECTIONS: To take public transportation to the event, take the Blue or Orange Metro line to McPherson Square station and use the exit marked “White House.” To plan your trip using public transportation, visit www.wmata.com (http://www.wmata.com/) and click on “Metro Trip Planner.”

Amnesty International is urging the Chinese government to keep its promises through 4 actions:
Fair Trials for All: End arbitrary police detentions, arrests without trial, and forced labor programs.
Rights Respected: Allow human rights defenders to carry out peaceful actions in accordance with international law.
Freedom from Censorship: Provide full media freedom to journalists, both foreign and domestic, and end censorship of the internet.
Stop Executions: Lower the number of crimes punishable by death and ensure fair trials for the accused.
