China to build world's largest pipeline

PetroChina Co Ltd, the country's top natural gas and oil producer, plans to start building a west-to-east 8,000-kilometer gas pipeline.
The 102-billion-yuan ($14.27b) pipeline to be constructed in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region will link the south to the Pearl River region and extend to the Yangtze River in the east.
The gas pipeline, the world's largest, will be the second one in China connecting the gas producing regions in western Xinjiang province to the eastern commercial and manufacturing centers.
The pipeline designed with an annual capacity of 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas to be delivered from domestic sources and Central Asian states will go on stream in 2010.
Petrochina will hold a ceremony in Beijing on Feb. 22 to mark the beginning of construction.
