Remarks of Congressman Christopher Smith (R-NJ)
on H. Res. 497 (Rebiya Kadeer)
Before the House of Representatives
September 17, 2007
[Mr./Madame] Speaker, I yield myself such time as I may consume.
I rise today to offer my endorsement of a resolution that recognizes the outstanding courage of a great lady.
At turning points in the history of a people, one man or woman seems to suddenly appear to ease their people’s pain and lead them out of captivity.
In ancient Egypt it was Moses. In colonial America it was George Washington. In Poland, it was His Holiness John Paul II. In Tibet it has been his Holiness, the Dalai Lama.
For the Uyghur (WE-GRRR) people, it is Rebiya Kadeer. (REB-EE-AH KAH-DEAR).
The resolution I put forward today recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable lady who is:
• A Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
• A leader in the Uyghur exile and human rights communities.
• A new friend of President Bush after their meeting this summer in Prague.
• A voice crying in the wilderness to the leaders in distant Beijing demanding an end to the suffering of her people under Communist tyranny.
If Beijing is ever to become a responsible stakeholder in the world and a worthy host of a major international event like the Olympic Games, then it must begun to demonstrate respect for the rights of minorities.
Respect is needed for the rights of Tibetans in their traditional home at the roof of the world, for the Uyghur people in their traditional homeland along the Silk Road, and for North Korean refugees fleeing in an underground railroad across China.
And Beijing should end the campaign of vendetta against the Kadeer family waged by local Chinese officials in their home region.
Beijing should immediately release the Kadeer children from incarceration and house arrest and desist from harassing them.
We join the voice of a courageous but anguished mother who cries, “Let my children go!”
We also ask that Mr. Celil (SUH-LIL), an ethnic Uyghur who is a citizen of our good friend and neighbor Canada, be released immediately so that he can rejoin his family living in that country.
We stand with the Government of Canada in seeking his early release.
In the darkness of the linguistic, cultural and religious suppression of the Uyghur people, Rebiya Kadeer stands out as a beacon of light and of hope.
Let us honor her and her work today by enthusiastically supporting this resolution.
I want to thank our Ranking Member, Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen, for authoring this resolution, which deserves our unanimous support.
I reserve the balance of my time.
