although it is another relative term ,
to be rich ....
according to whom or to which kind of measuring standards...
recently I read a message on this forum about rich people in Xinjiang...
apparently they do not know of Mr. Ahmet Temur,
one of the most prominent antique collectors in the whole of China.
I was able to take my guests from the USA
paper historians from Brookline Massachusetts
to visit him and he was kind and showed a major part of his collection.
(also he gave them beautiful Khotan jade Buddha carvings as gifts)
Having travelled across Xinjiang and visited most of the museums,
he definitely has collected enough to fill 10-20 museums ;
matter of fact we were accompanied by esteemed Gazi Ahmed,
Abdukayim Hoca from the museum of Xinjiang (and other friends, journalists)
who got so excited and offered his services to Mr.Temur
to do research on the available materials
mentioning many books could be published as a result
(of course after he retired from the museum)
Mr.Ahmet Temur is a wise man with lasting projects,
among which is a personal museum
where he will share his accumulation with the public.
Once permits and due insurance funds are available
he plans to exhibit some of his collection in the USA,
the Uygur Nightingale Dilber Hanim will give concerts
at exhibition receptions.....
Today there are many wealthy Uygurs in and out of Xinjiang,
but most of them do not have the vision
to do benevolent actions for the public
like supporting the arts and or sciences
sponsoring research projects, publishing finished works in many fields of academic interest.....
(it is tax deductable in the USA and other european nations!!!!)
they cannot be blamed for it
because they do not have the intellectual capacity.
As Ataturk once has said ,
Koylu milletin efendisidir ( dehkan halkning efendisi) (farmers are the lords)
we were able to prove this by taking the Uygur papermaker
from an unknown village of Karakash-Khotan to USA,
his richness was his loyalty to traditional craft
which he faithfully carried up until today.
I AM VERY PROUD TO BRING GLOBAL RECOGNITION AND FACE
TO DISAPPERING CRAFT OF PAPERMAKING IN XINJIANG,
with the help of Mr.Gazi Ahmed,Smithsonian Institution,Paper Road Tibet Org,World Paper from the USA,Society of Dard Hunter Friends USA,
Pyramid Atlantic Book Arts centre Silverspring Md,IRCICA Istanbul,UNESCO,
to name a few major names
FOUR YEARS AGO THE PAPER HAD NO CUSTOMERS
AND WAS SELLING AT 2 MOCHEN (local cents) A SHEET,
TODAY THEY BRAVELY ASK 30 YUANS !!!!!!!! 4 $ A SHEET .....IN KHOTAN
AND TV AND NEWS PEOPLE FLOCK TO KHOTAN
FROM BEIJING , SHANGAI ETC. to report on this traditional craft.
MR.GHAZI AHMED 1ST DEGREE PAINTER IN CHINA AND XINJIANG
WHO HAD INTRODUCED ME TO KHOTAN PAPER BY WRITING ISLAMIC CALLIGRAPHY,TODAY EXPERIMENTS DIFFERENT PAINTING TECHNIQUES
WHICH WE WILL EXHIBIT IN THE USA AND OTHER EUROPEAN AND ISLAMIC NATIONS.
CALLIGRAPHERS FROM KHOTAN ARE ALREADY WRITING BEAUTIFUL SCRIPTS
FROM YUSUF HAS HAJIB,ALI SIR NAVAI,KASHGARLIK MAHMUD
AND NEWLY BUILT GRAND BAZAR IN URUMCHI HAS EXAMPLES OF ARTWORK
ON KHOTAN PAPER.....
ozunu mahtagan ahmak bolsamu ...(one who praise hisownself is a fool...)
I have been able to marble Khotan paper for the 1st time in its history,
created pulp calligraphy, applied petroglyph designs of Xinjiang rock paintings
and since seven years been attending Turkish Festivals and other organizations and conferences and seminars promoting Khotan paper
in USA and >South America and Islamic nations.
Our wealth lies in our past contribution to global civilization,
and the wisdom to achieve contemporary and financial recognition
by promoting an already disappearing accumulation of cultural heritage.
There is yet a lot to do
and we will need sponsors to achieve
lasting results and financial & social rewards.....
cordially,
oguzhan
