UAA Letter of Congratulations to President Bush’s Second Term
Friday, January 21, 2005
President George W. Bush,
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Bush,
The Uyghur American Association (UAA) would like to congratulate the commencement of your second term as U.S. President and expresses its deepest gratitude to your commitment to defend freedom and end tyranny around the world. You have given great hope for the freedom of the oppressed Uyghur people under Chinese tyranny.
We are delighted to know that “it is the policy of the United State to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.†America is indeed our beacon of hope because ending Chinese tyranny and defending the freedom of the Uyghur people in East Turkistan has always been the name of our democratic movement since 1949.
We believe, as you eloquently pointed out in your inaugural speech, that “There is only one force of history that can break the reign of hatred and resentment, and expose the pretensions of tyrants, and reward the hopes of the decent and tolerant, and that is the force of human freedom.†And freedom is our ultimate goal.
We know that freedom is not free. But we love liberty and will continue to defend our freedom because they are our unalienable rights endowed by the Creator. We deserve to live in a democratic country that guarantees our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That is why we have rejected the existence of permanent Chinese tyranny in East Turkistan because we do not accept the possibility of permanent slavery under its authoritarian rule. The Chinese government is not our master, and we are not its slaves.
As Uyghurs and Uyghur Americans, we thank you for protecting the human rights of the Uyghur people in East Turkistan. Your administration has done many great things during the past four years for the suffering people in China-occupied East Turkistan. However, it is a fact that after terrorist attacks on America on September 11, 2001, China began to use this tragedy as an excuse to justify its tyranny in East Turkistan by persecuting the Uyghur people, calling them “terrorists†since they are Muslims. Despite your strong warning in October 2001, China continues to hijack the global war on terror as a cover to further deny the Uyghur people their right to freedom and instead intensifies its tyranny.
The situation in East Turkistan is worsening day by day, but we believe that your administration can exert enormous pressure on China to respect the human rights and religious freedom of the Uyghur people. We hope that you will continue to raise the issue of East Turkistan whenever you meet with the Chinese heads of state and impress upon them that China has no right to persecute the Uyghur people as an ethnic group in the name of global war on terror.
We believe that the United States will not ignore our oppression even though we are Muslims, or excuse our ruthless oppressors in Beijing. We also believe that when we stand for our liberty, America will stand with us. With our resolve, and with the support of the U.S. government, our liberty will come to us sooner and sooner.
We thank you for your continuous support of the people of East Turkistan and once again congratulate you for your second term in the White House.
Respectfully,
Board of Directors,
Uyghur American Association
