URUMQI: A bumper cotton harvest is expected in Xinjiang province. In 2006, the cotton planting area in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (PCC) has reached 471,333 hectares.

The Agriculture Bureau of PCC said here on September 12, if the recent weather remains stable, a bumper harvest is certain.

Output will break the 1 million ton mark for the first time ever. Average yields will probably exceed 2100 kg/ha, up 150 kg from a year ago. The yield estimate is also a new record for the PCC.

Cotton in several agricultural divisions of the PCC in north Xinjiang has started batting. Some collection is already taking place. Favorable weather the last month will allow some fields near the Tianshan Mountains to be picked in the last half of September.
