BEIJING (MarketWatch) -- PetroChina Co. (PTR) Monday completed the construction of a natural gas pipeline in northwestern Xinjiang to meet increasing domestic demand for the clean fuel, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.

The pipeline, which runs from Karamay field in northern Xinjiang to Urumqi, the capital city in central Xinjiang, is 285 kilometers long and cost CNY600 million ($75 million) to build, it said.

The pipeline has the capacity to transport 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and is expected to begin operations in August, Xinhua reported.
PetroChina also operates an existing natural gas pipeline along the same route, the report said, adding that the older pipeline has a smaller capacity.
