UCA Asks Canada to act now to free Mr. Huseyin Celil from China's Jail

June 27, 2006
For Immediate release

The Uyghur Canadian Association (UCA) is shocked to learn that Huseyincan Celil, Uyghur origin Canadian citizen of Burlington Ontario while visiting relatives in Uzbekistan was arrested in Tashkent by Uzbekistan Authorities and has recently been deported to China against his will. Mr. Celil now faces the death penalty because he was previously sentenced to death in absentia for founding a political party to work on behalf of the Uyghur people in East Turkistan (also known as Xinjiang Autonomous Region). Celil fled the China in the mid-1990s and came to Canada in 2001 as a refugee. He is now a proud Canadian citizen.

“It is a major setback for Canada and huge victory for tyranny, like China and Uzbekistan, said, Mohamed Tohti, President of Uyghur Canadian Association. Canada has not done enough to free him from Uzbeki Jail in past three month and become totally reliable to the personal effort of Honorary Consulate from Tashkent who is Uzbek citizen”

Mr. Celil is an upstanding Canadian who has an excellent reputation as a man of integrity. He is a respected leader in our community. He has long supported the rights of Uyghurs to self-determination in peaceful way. His leadership of a political movement to organize Uyghurs to demand their rights through non-violent means is protected by the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Chinese Government’s claims that Mr. Celil has engaged in illegal activities have no basis in truth whatsoever.

The Uyghur Canadian Association is grievously concerned about the treatment that Mr. Celil may presently be receiving while in Chinese custody. The Canadian Government as a matter of prior must insist that the Chinese Government tell us where he is being held and allow Canadian consular officials to visit Mr. Celil to ensure that he remains in good health and that he has not been mistreated in any way while in Chinese custody. We also need to know what the basis for any charges against Mr. Celil is. If there is no clear and certain evidence that Mr. Celil has committed any crimes under international law then he should be returned to his family in Canada forthwith.

Most importantly Mr. Celil is a Canadian citizen who is being falsely accused of political crimes. This matter therefore demands that the Canadian Government make an unequivocal statement to the Government of China of our Government’s displeasure at this turn of events. Canada should make the strongest representation that Mr. Celil be immediately returned to Canada. It is time for the Canadian Government to act before this matter turns to tragedy.

Uyghur Canadian Association once again strongly demands from Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper to step up and ensure his safe return to Canada.

Canada must act and time is now.
