PTDC delegates leave for China to attend Silk Road forum

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: A three-member delegation of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) has left for Urumqi, China, to attend an international Silk Road forum, organised by the government of Xinjiang.

The delegation is being headed by PTDC Managing Director Brig (r) Hashim Khan. The forum ‘Silk Road International Tourism Project’ will start on April 6 and will continue for four days. The forum aims to promote cooperation between eastern and western China and to speed up economic development and cooperation along the Silk Road. It is the 10th investment and trade forum to increase cooperation between eastern and western China. The forum is being sponsored by China Investment Trade Promotion Commission, National Industry and Commerce Administrative Board, Shanxi provincial government, Xinjiang provincial government and 23 other private groups.

The Pakistani delegation has been invited to attend the forum and discuss opportunities for further enhancing cooperation between the two countries and to share ideas and views to increase economic activity in the region. Pakistan also plans to organise a Silk Route festival during its ‘Visit Pakistan-2007’.

The government had earlier decided to celebrate 2006 as ‘Visit Pakistan’ year and had formulated plans for a number of events to highlight its diverse culture but the events had to be postponed until next year after the October 8 earthquake. Both Pakistan and China have already agreed to open the the Silk Route for trade between the two countries.
