Can anyone provide some information on the 'beg system' in Xinjiang?

Was it abolished by the Qing China (1759-1911) or the Republic China(1911-1949)?

When was it last replaced by the Chinese provincial rule?

Information with sources is extremely appreciated.

You can check these sources:

Newby, L. J. (1998). "The begs of Xinjiang: between two worlds." Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies. University of London 61(2): 278-297.

Also James Millward and Ildiko Beller-Hann's books on Xinjiang also touch upon 'beg system'.
