Kings of the Sky
A film by Deborah Stratman

This film follows Adil Hoxur and other members of a Uyghur acrobatic
troupe on a tour of cities and towns in Xinjiang, in Chinese Central
Asia. Adiljan is a famous high-wire artist, and the film shows him
walking a tightrope between buildings, across the Yangzi Gorges, and
over the hazardous political territory inhabited by Uyghurs in China
today. (In early 2004, several members of Adil's troupe defected
while on tour in Canada.) Besides phenomenal acrobatic footage, the
film provides a unique glimpse into life in Eastern Turkestan, as the
Xinjiang region is known to many.

A discussion with Professor James Millward of the Department of
History will follow the film.
