Chinese famous coloratura soprano Dilber will stage her first Shanghai concert at the Oriental Arts Center next Saturday, a year after she lost her voice.
The coloratura from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region lost her voice for four months after her newly married husband, film director Yu Xiaoyang, died of asthma on a train back to Beijing a year ago.
"I could not accept the fact that my dear husband, who'd just talked with me hours ago left me forever," recalls Dilber. "I still can't believe it even today. I was so heartbroken that I suddenly lost my voice and then quit all performances."
Recalling those dark days, Dilber, who's also called the "Chinese Nightingale," said she almost lost the courage to live on.
"At the hardest time I had to have people to accompany me 24 hours a day because I was so afraid of the night and the darkness," she says. "But with the help of my family and friends, I finally got through. Now you see me here, back to the stage again."
Considered one of the world's best coloratura sopranos, Dilber has been active on European stages for more than 20 years and now sings with the National Opera House of Finland and the Malmo Opera House of Sweden.
Dilber started to sing folk songs and pop songs in public at a very young age. Afterwards she studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and began a European career after taking part in the Mirjam Helin Singing Competition in Helsinki.
Engagements followed swiftly from the major opera houses around the world.
She was awarded the "Golden Record" and "Best Performer" in China in 2003. She's been an honorary professor at Xinjiang Arts College and professor at the Xinjiang University, where the Dilber Vocal Music Art Research Center was established in 2003.
Dilber will present a wide repertoire ranging from works of Mendelssohn and R. Strauss to folk songs from Ireland and China at the local concert.
Shanghai Opera House Symphony Orchestra will accompany her for the concert under the baton of Zheng Xiaoying, China's first female conductor who is now musical director of the Xiamen Symphony Orchestra.
"I've cooperated with Zheng on two concerts in 1984 and 2004," says Dilber. "She is such a mature, professional conductor that she never wastes a minute during rehearsal."

she has the right to marry anyone she wants. she's uyghur in europe but chinese when she is in china. she can also be muslim when she goes to mecca.many uyghurs have multiple identities, like uyghur, muslim, communist and so on. uyghurs have to learn to negotiate their identities especially when they are in china. only those who can better negotiate their identities can be able to lead a better life in the chinese society. anyone would like to add more comments???

Default Dilber is an Uygur heroine in the world of Fine Arts
before I write any further ,
heroine - means a female hero !

Second ,
it is incredible how the reporter can be so destructive
in his comment and interpretation of a successful Uygur lady,
and a time when she needs consolation
at the loss of her husband.

It is true that many people have
diverse identities.

The reporter shared with us many of his views and
happennings in the world of Uygurs and Chinese,
but never with proper respect to our neighbours !

Personally I would not give much credit to Chinese
if they had done one sided report of this event,

but we must treat everybody else with due respect and cordiality.

Especially if Islamic ethics and moral code is concerned:

In the prayer of AMENTU ;
it is said that any thing that is good
or bad comes from Allah !

And that Allah has created all of us
from one drop of water !

this includes all races and nations !

If Allah had favoured Islam believers above all others
then there would only be moslems on earth !

If Allah is not making a chioce
and sends everybody else and create all else

we should be more respectful and love his creation

BECAUSE HE CREATED THEM !


If we want Islam to be the way of humanbeings,

then let us set examplary human life styles
full of love,respect,understanding,sharing......

then let other people wonder
what we eat,what we believe,what we do

because OUR FACES ARE SHINING WITH NUR OF ALLAH !


Please,before we criticise Uygur ladies for the people they may want to marry,

let us become desirable/ intelligent /creative ....successful Uygur men !


By the way now that that this sensitive topic is open to discussion;

how can it be acceptable for the leaders of the Uygur community
in Germany to marry German ladies ?

Now that they have committed the marriage,
how successful were they to teach them Uygur language and culture ?


This reminds me of the famous Uygur duck !
who travels around the world
and complains that the world stink !!!!!!!!

The news of esteemed Dilber hanim is good,
although of course the loss of her dear husband -is bad,

but the way the news is presented

shows a base attitude,
which is not fitting to the
civilized Uygur image
that I would like to cherish in my mind,

and that I personally am trying to spread around.

Her own family, father, mother and brothers, disavowed her 20 years ago when she first married to a Chinese. You can imagine what other Uyghurss think of her if her own family does that. She is just another singer who happens to have Uyghur blood. Uyghurs have good genes for singing. There will be many, many real Uyghurs who happen to be singers.

this is not true. they have never disawed her. she has visted her home several times. her mother, brothers went to the airport to meet her at kashgar.

The first line of dialogue should read "I am here to negotiate my identity, sir."

In case you do not read Chinese, "Sunzi" means "grandson" literally, but it means "slave" when it is used in derogatory sense.

To clarify any misunderstanding, there are only two people in the dialogue-- Mr Wang and the negotiator formerly known as Mr. Smith. The varion in the spelling of his name is the result of evolution as the extrem make-over progresses.

she has never tried to change her uyghur name into either chinese or english name, which well indicate she has a strong ethnic identity. to some extent, her uyghur identity is much stronger that those uyghurs in the states who have changed their uyghur names into american names just because their uyghur names have contained such elements as "mohammed" or "abdul".
