The traditional music and dance of the Central Asian Uyghurs: thrilling vocals are accompanied by long-necked lutes, spike fiddle and frame drum. This easternmost example of maqām, with its ‘limping’ rhythms and ecstatic poetry, is deeply imbued with the Sufi ethos.
