I was reading that Uyghurs follow the Sunni School of Malik, i.e. they are Malikis. Can someone provide me with historical background as to how this came about? Also, are there any good recipes that we could download?

Many Uyghurs who speak English are probably semi-literate in Islam or religion in general and its history, because religion is banned in schools in East Turkistan. The few who picked up religion from other Muslim communities around them after they left East Turkistan have adopted different versions from what Uyghurs have back home. So, I would not think they know anything about what Uyghurs believe in East Turkistan. Unfortunately, the people who could answer your question may not speak English.
Tough luck.
I wish I could be help.

From my knowledge that I have learnt from my grandfather - Uyghurs follow Sun'i type, school of Hanifi, not Malik; I am sorry I can't provide you more than what I learnt. But I'm sure soon somebody who's fluent in English would be able to answer your question in detail.
