Uighur visits adds to tension

THE Chinese embassy in Canberra has protested to the government against the planned visit to Australia of controversial Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed yesterday that the Chinese embassy had made representations.

The international travels of Ms Kadeer are starting to attract similar opposition from Beijing to those of the Dalai Lama, whom it also views as a separatist troublemaker.

Her arrival in Australia will exacerbate tensions with China, already high as a result of the arrest of Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu and other issues.

Ms Kadeer, the US-based president of the World Uighur Congress, is at present visiting Japan, causing the Japanese ambassador to be summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Beijing in protest.

Ms Kadeer is flying to Australia chiefly to participate in the launch at the Melbourne International Film Festival on August 8 of a documentary, 10 Conditions of Love, in which she is the heroine.

She will also meet members of Australia's 2000-strong Uighur community.

Her participation in the festival, where Greens leader Bob Brown will formally launch the film, has already caused a furore. Five films -- from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan -- have been withdrawn as a result.

According to director Richard Moore, the website of the festival was attacked last weekend by scores of hackers, apparently from China, imposing the Chinese flag on the site.

The Chinese government has blamed Ms Kadeer -- formerly one of China's most successful businesswomen but then jailed for six years for pro-independence activities -- for instigating the recent violence between Uighurs and Han Chinese in Xinjiang, when almost 200 people were killed.

People's Daily Online said Ms Kadeer "and other separatists stirred up violence, and ... with her stooges, laid a big, wicked trap".
