I compose a letter to local and US senators. Please use this letter if you like and send them right away.
Thanks,
Dear Honorable Senator,
July 5th, 2009 was a very dark and sad day for the Uyghur people. On that day a small number of Uyghurs gathered in front of the provincial capitol , Urumqi, Xinjiang , China to protest. Their purpose was simple: they wanted the government to take a just action about horrible deaths of between 60 – 100 Uyghur workers in Guandong Province in Southern China. However, instead of hearing to the demonstrators, the Chinese government sent riot police and paramilitary forces to crackdown on the peaceful and innocent demonstrators. As a result, the demonstration has become one of most deadly riots in recent Chinese history in decades. According some media more than 180 people have been killed by the police and the mob of Han Chinese, over 1,000 people have been injured and more than 1,500 Uyghur people have been arrested by the Chinese government between July 5 – July 6th. However, according to Uyghur source, over 1,000 Uyghur people were slaughtered by the Chinese police and the mob of Han Chinese.
As an Uyghur living in the great country of the United States of America, I ask you to talk to the President Obama to take immediate action on China to stop slaughtering innocent Uyghurs. The July 5th Urumqi Riot was nothing but another Darfur Massacre. We, the Uyghurs are peace loving and harmonious people who are hungry for democracy, freedom and self- determination. We neither want another Darfur nor Israeli – Palestinian conflict. Since 1955, we have been suffering under the Chinese oppressive policy and our basic human rights have been violated by the government as evidenced by the Urumqi riot. Our survival is at risk, we are helpless but hopeful that democratic countries like the US will hear our voice, cries and help us. We are desperate for HELP!!! We understand that China is the largest debt holder of the US, and the US government does not want to anger China. However, the American people value human lives, liberty and democracy and freedom therefore I ask you on behalf of helpless Uyghur people to talk to Chinese officials. Currently we want China to halt killing Uyghur people immediately, and to release the Uyghur prisoners and to provide medical treatment to injured Uyghur people. The governor of Xinjiang(Wang Lequan) and other party officials said in Chinese media that they would execute Uyghurs immediately who organized the demonstration. His inhuman actions must be stopped immediately. As the US has a bigger voice in international communities, the government should also use their powerful voice to prevent further atrocities in China. Here is the brief background of the riot and the Uyghur people.
Background of July 5th Urumqi Riot
On June 26, a number of Chinese workers in a factory in Guangdong province raided into Uyghur workers' dormitory and killed and injured the Uyghurs. Reasons? The Uyghurs were falsely accused of raping a Chinese woman in the factory. Although the government proved that they were falsely accused, the Guandong provincial police and the government ignored the incident and locked up the rest of the Uyghur factory workers nearby. Due to the unjust policy of the Chinese government, the Uyghurs in Urumqi organized a peaceful demonstration.
Who are Uyghur people?
The Uyghurs are a Turkic minority, who live in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest of China. The name of Xinjiang was given by the Chinese, which means “new territory” or “new frontier.” However, Uyghur people call Xinjiang as East Turkestan or Uyghurstan. The Uyghurs are one of the most open and pro-western Muslims. By race, culture, language and religion, they are Turk like the people in Turkey. The Uyghur people became a colony of China after 1949 and the Chinese government renamed Xinjiang as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in 1955. But the Uyghur have never experienced autonomy and Xinjiang has become a Chinese region instead of being an Uyghur Autonomous region under the repressive, totalitarian and genocidal Chinese government. Prior to 1955, less than 6% of the population of East Turkestan were Han Chinese but now the Han Chinese constitutes more than 45% of the total population. East Turkestan has more than 100 precious minerals including oil, natural gas, uranium, gold and more and it is the largest province in China. These are the brief highlights of the Chinese government policy in East Turkestan:
• Treated as second class citizens; denied jobs, school and hospital admissions
• Outspoken Uyghurs are labeled as “separatists”, “splittists” and “terrorists”
• Political activists are subject to death penalty, life time and or long term prison sentences without a fair trial.
• Uyghur women are subject to forced abortion and heavy fines
• Uyghur language and schools are eliminated and been replaced by Chinese language and schools
• Practice of Islam is banned for under 18 years old youth and government officials and they are persecuted if they practice
• Destroying Uyghur culture and historic places
• Trafficking young Uyghur girls and men to other parts of China and forced into prostitution and slavery
• Sending millions of poor Chinese migrant workers to East Turkestan
• Natural resources are exploited by the government (with GDP over 60 billion Yuan) but Uygur people are marginalized
• Uyghur workers are replaced by Han Chinese and forced to leave their home of East Turkestan
• Uyghur homes have been taken away by the Chinese government and destroyed without compensation to the Uyghur families
• Uyghurs are denied access to passports, visas while the Han Chinese are free to obtain passports without any trouble.
• Uyghur refugees are forcefully returned to China by neighboring countries due to China's request and are promptly executed on their return
Thank you very much in advance,
Thanks,
