*MEDIA ADVISORY:*
UYGHUR SOLIDARITY RALLY AND MARCH
(Vancouver, July 11, 2009)
On Sunday July 12 up to 400 people will gather in Vancouver to rally in support of the Uyghur people, protesting the Chinese Government’s oppressive occupation of East Turkistan (Ch: Xinjiang). Uyghurs in their homeland face discrimination and marginalization, and have spoken out through protest. The Chinese Government has reacted with a brutal crackdown in which hundreds have been killed and thousands arrested.
On Sunday Uyghur Canadians will raise their voices for their homeland, joined by supporters from Turkish, Tibetan, and other communities.
Turkey has been a strong supporter of the Uyghur people, and has appealed to the UN for intervention in the current crisis.
Tibetans worldwide have spoken out in solidarity and understanding with the Uyghurs, as they share a common catastrophe. 60 years ago both countries were invaded by the Chinese Communist Army. Under Chinese Government occupation, both have been subject to racism, extreme suppression, and marginalization in what amounts to cultural genocide. Both continue to suffer brutality, and destruction of their way of life in the name of “development”.
The Chinese Government continues to fail to understand that “harmony” can never be achieved through brutality and dehumanizing policies and practices toward people it calls “minorities”.
