The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) congratulates President George W. Bush for winning the U.S. presidential election for a second term on Wednesday. The victory of President Bush gives great hope for oppressed Uyghur people under the authoritarian regime in Beijing.

“I’m delighted in the victory of President George Bush,” said Erkin Alptekin, President of WUC, “Because his administration has taken positive steps in championing the human rights of the Uyghur people and in improving the worsening situation in East Turkestan.”

It was during the Bush Administration that the East Turkestan Question finally became an international issue and concern. It was President Bush who warned China not to persecute the Uyghur people in the name of fighting against terrorism while attending the APEC meeting in Shanghai in November 2002. It was President Bush who sent Lorne Craner, Assistant Secretary of State, to visit Urumchi to express the U.S. friendship to the people of East Turkestan in December 2002.

“Apparently, the Bush Administration has been very proactive in protecting the Uyghur people’s human rights despite China’s massive propaganda in the world that the Uyghur Muslims are ‘terrorists’ linked to international terrorism,” said, Alim Seytoff, Chairman for the Executive Committee of WUC.

Although the East Turkestan Question initially posed a dilemma to the Bush Administration, but it was able to take a correct approach in preventing China from hijacking the international war on terror and further persecuting the Uyghur people. As a result, the Bush Administration has decided not to return the Uyghur detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to China. Currently, the U.S. is trying to locate them in a third country.

“We believe President Bush will do more in the next four years in spreading democracy in the world and promoting human rights of the oppressed peoples like the Uyghur Muslims of East Turkestan.”

Bush administration abetted Chinese government's persecution of Uyghurs by placing ETIM on global terror list. It would be too optimistic if you believe Bush is so enthusiastic about protecting human rights of Uyghur people.
