President George W. Bush,
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Bush,

The Uyghur American Association (UAA) would like to congratulate you for your victory today. We are very glad that you will serve our nation for the next four years. We are quite sure that you will continue to guide our country in the right direction and promote democracy and human rights around the world.

As Uyghurs and Uyghur Americans, we thank you for protecting the human rights of the Uyghur people in East Turkestan (what is now the “Xinjiang” Uyghur Autonomous Region of China). Your administration has done many great things in the past four years for the suffering people in China-occupied East Turkestan.

Despite your stern warning in 2002, China has been using the international war on terror as a cover to further persecute the Uyghur people as they are Muslims. As you are aware that China is attempting to criminalize even peaceful Uyghur dissent as “terrorism.” Just last month, China sentenced more than 50 Uyghurs on charges of “terrorism” in spite of the fact that there has been no acts of terrorism took place in East Turkestan.

The situation in East Turkestan is getting worse and worse. However, we believe that your administration can exert enormous pressure on China to respect the human rights and religious freedom of the Uyghur people. We hope that you continue to raise the issue of East Turkestan whenever you meet with the Chinese heads of state and to tell them that China has no right to persecute the Uyghur people as an ethnic group in the name of international war on terror.

We thank you for your continuous support of the people of East Turkestan. We once again congratulate you for your victory in this presidential election.
