Palau offers to resettle 17 Chinese Guantanamo detainees

Posted at 01:25 on 10 June, 2009 UTC

Palau says it has agreed to accept 17 Chinese detainees for temporary resettlement to end their eight-year jail time at the US-run prison camp in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The Marianas Variety reports that Palau’s President Johnson Toribiong is in favour of accepting them, but he says it is still not known whether the detainees will be brought to Palau.

Mr Toribiong says Palau’s decision is a humanitarian gesture intended to help them be freed from any further unnecessary incarceration.

He says this will enable the Chinese detainees to restart their lives in a normal fashion.

The president says the decision has nothing to do with the upcoming review of the Compact of Free Association under which the US gives large sums to Palau.

The detainees are ethnic Uighurs from the mostly Muslim autonomous region in western China.

Guam

Guam - Palauan President JohnsonToribiong has agreed to temporarily, accept the resettlement of 17 Uyghurs currently being held in the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba.

Uyghurs are an ethnic Muslim minority group in China.

According to a Ministry of State news release posted on the "okedyulabeluu" blog site, the decision follows a meeting last Thursday in Palau with a delegation of officials from the U.S. Government.

The release states that Palau’s agreement to accept the temporary resettlement of these detainees "is a humanitarian gesture intended to help them be freed from any further unnecessary incarceration and to restart their lives anew in as normal a fashion as possible."

President Toribiong is quoted in the report as saying that: “I am honored and proud that the United States has asked Palau to assist with such a critical task. This is but a small thing that we can do to thank our best friend and ally for all it has done for Palau.”

Meanwhile, the Palauan edition of the Marianas Variety reports that even though Palau has agreed to accept the Uyghurs, he doesn't know whether the detainees will be brought to Palau.

Toribiong also also told the paper that his decision has nothing to do with the upcoming review of the Compact’s financial provisions, which Palau wants extended.
