Among those who were rounded up by U.S. military police in Afghanistan in the months following September 11th were a group of Chinese Muslims, known as "Uighurs." The Uighurs were held first at a military facility in Kandahar, and then transferred to the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. There, the Uighurs have remained for more than three years, despite having been cleared of all charges more than six months ago. Sabin Willett is a Boston-based attorney who represents two of the Uighurs. It was Willett who found out in July, quite by accident, that his clients had been cleared of wrong-doing.
