Re: Dismissal of Omar Kanat from Radio Free Asia

Dear Ms. Liu:

Since the news broke out about Mr. Omer Kanat's dismissal from Radio Free Asia ("RFA") Uyghur Service, there have been calls, messages and e-mails exchanges among the Uyghurs all around the world. The messages include sadness, disbelief, and of course disappointment with the RFA's decision. Mr. Kanat has been the most prominent and the most trusted journalist among Uyghurs. With experience, unique skills, hard work, dedication and an extensive network he had created over the years, he had become the heart and soul of the RFA Uyghur Service for the listeners. His name and voice has become the symbol for independent news for a lot of Uyghurs.

Mr. Kanat has been the first person to call for those who want to share valuable information with the public, including Uyghur refugees who just escaped from the Chinese suppression and former political prisoners who were just released from Chinese dungeons. He was the only person in Uyghur service that serves original reporting. His interviews with Hasan Mahsum, a China's most wanted man, who died shortly after, with Mehmet Emin Hezret, also China's most wanted, Shirali, a political prisoner who was tortured and then executed, with the family of Ismayil Semed, who was executed, as well as his stories about the Tibetan government in exile in India and Uyghur refugees around the world have been the most important and interesting stories for the Uyghur communities worldwide. He revealed the torture and mistreatment of the Uyghur political prisoners with his engagement and perseverance. After each of these stories, Uyghur community expressed their gratitude and appreciation for Mr. Kanat in several ways including to writing on various internet message boards.

Additionally, Mr. Kanat's reporting from Iraq and Afghanistan wars were the first reporting from war-zone in Uyghur language which excited Uyghur listeners around the world in a great extent. At the same time, his reporting from the ground offered non-bias information to the contrast of Chinese official propaganda. He has always been a brave journalist and a dedicated professional. His knowledge of international affairs, strong communication skills, research methods, and multilingual language skills make him one of the well-known intellectuals of the Uyghur community.

Mr Kanat has also been the most trusted journalist and the best researcher within the RFA Uyghur service. Through his extensive network of scholars, leaders, and activists around the world, Mr. Kanat has provided accurate, timely and independent information for the Uyghurs and successfully struggled with the censorship and the government control in China.

Mr. Kanat's dismissal is not only a major setback for his professional career, but also a new barrier for freedom of information and news for the Uyghur people, which is the main reason of RFA's establishment and existence. This disappointing event has already tainted the image of the RFA around the world among Uyghurs. The treatment of the most respected and trusted Uyghur journalist is causing disillusionment and disenchantment regarding RFA programs. As the loyal supporters of the RFA Uyghur program, I respectfully ask the RFA leadership to reconsider their decision about Mr. Kanat. Uyghur community around the world is ready to do whatever it can in order to resolve this issue and once again to listen the reporting of Mr. Kanat in RFA Uyghur Service.

Finally, worldwide Uyghur communities want RFA to succeed but it is hard to imagine this organization's future success without a dedicated and seasoned journalist, such as Mr. Kanat

Sincerely,
