European Parliament member Cem Ozdemir was elected co-chairman of German Alliance 90/Greens Party on Saturday.
Ozdemir has become the first party leader of foreign descent in the history of Federal Republic of Germany.
During the congress of the party in Erfurt, Ozdemir won 79.2 percent of the votes of delegates.
617 delegates voted for Ozdemir, 107 against and 46 abstained.
Other co-chairperson of the party Claudia Roth won 82.7 percent of the votes.
Ozdemir, son of a Turkish migrant family, was born in Germany in 1965.
He started his political career in German Alliance 90/Greens Party in 1981. He also has been the member of European Parliament since 2004.
Ozdemir told AA that they would focus on representing the people who were excluded from the society.
