Today I have come across an article that I published on the net 3 years ago in responce to Professor Justin Rudelson's testimony on Uyghurs at the US Congtress and decided to post it here as it is relavant to the ongoing discussion on religion.

My view on the subject expressed in this article has not changed. I'll translate this into Uyghur when I get a chance and publish it at appropriate venue including this phorum. But, it won't happen in the near future. Meanwhile, I welcome translation by good-will volunteers if there is any.

Very well-written article! I really enjoyed it. You are absolutely right by saying that the Uyghur culture not the religion that binds Uyghurs together, of course the culture is heavily influenced by religion.
However, there are a few questions in my mind. In what sense you think there is a line between secular Uyghurs and religious ones? What if someone is secular in his/her actions, but religious in his/her belief at the same time? Would that be contradictory?
If anyone can talk about this, I would aprreciate it.
